Dutch School, Mid 19th Century
Oil on Panel, wax seals on the reverse
12 x 16 in.
The reverse of this painting has an old label inscribed with the name P. Potter and bears wax seals which were probably estate seals of previous owners. However, the fine hand who executed this painting, although greatly influenced by Paulus Potter (Dutch, 1625-1654), probably lived in the mid-l9th Century because the panel was smoothly planed by machine. In the mid-l640’s, Paulus Potter depicted strategically arranged cows in flat landscapes and farmyard scenes. Typical of Potter is the use light reflected from water to illuminate the underbellies and udders of the cows to give a fuller three-dimensional definition of the animals.

Then Grenness was exposed to an entirely different style of art by spending 1902 and 1903 with Vassilij Kandinsky in Munich. Grenness developed his own style. His palate of colors is unique among Danish painters of his era. He used a palate knife for large areas such as the shawl but did faces and hands meticulously.
